❓
Can visitors use the Friday Center park-and-ride?On ordinary days the Town says UNC's lots, including Friday Center, are for university or hospital employees and students, and Town permits are not valid there. Chapel Hill Transit routes FCX (Friday Center) and S (Friday Center South) serve the lot, and conference guest permits are not valid in the park-and-ride lot. On football and basketball days the lot is free for the Tar Heel Express ($10 round trip). The Town's $2 daily park-and-ride rate applies to its own lots (Eubanks Road, Jones Ferry Road and Southern Village), not Friday Center.

❓
Is downtown Carrboro parking free?Yes. The Town of Carrboro's downtown page says all Town public parking downtown is free with a 2-hour limit, and cars may not stay in public lots past 3:00 a.m. That includes the Drakeford Library Complex garage (203 S. Greensboro St., entrance on Roberson St.). The Weaver Street public lot (303 W. Weaver St.) is named as event parking. Carr Mill Mall's lot, including Harris Teeter and CVS, is not public and towing is possible. The split Sunset Drive and Rosemary Street lot is paid on the Chapel Hill side and free on the Carrboro side. A paid-parking proposal (about $1.50 an hour after the first 30 minutes in listed lots and on-street spaces) went to Council on Sept. 12, 2024 and was still only a proposal when The Local Reporter wrote about it on May 29, 2025; we found no record that it was adopted, so free 2-hour parking is the posted rule today.

❓
When do the gates open at Kenan Stadium?Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff (UNC Athletics, Sept. 1, 2026). Gate 5 is student-only; public gates include 1, 2, 3 and 6, and entry screening is Evolv. As an example, for the noon Notre Dame game on Oct. 3, 2026, UNC's timeline put the gates at 10:30 a.m. Pregame: the Chapel Thrill festivities start three hours before every home kickoff, performers start two hours before in front of Wilson Library, and Old Well Walk is about two and a half hours before kickoff. (The 2024 guide's 'about 30 minutes before kickoff' no longer applies.)

❓
What is the Kenan Stadium clear bag policy?UNC's standing game-day guide (page dated 2023, still the live A-to-Z on Oct. 2, 2026; no separate 2026 bag release was found) allows one clear plastic or vinyl bag up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches, including a gallon freezer bag, or a small clutch up to 4.5 x 6.5 inches, plus medical items after inspection. Listed exceptions: camera bags, binocular cases, seat cushions with pockets, and clear backpacks that stay inside those dimensions. Umbrellas may not be opened in the stadium.

The concessionaire does not accept a vertical (under-21) North Carolina license. The campus is smoke-free, including e-cigarettes, within 100 feet of venues.

❓
Can you tailgate before UNC football games?Yes. For 2026 the Chapel Thrill pregame party starts three hours before every home kickoff (UNC Athletics, Sept. 1, 2026). For the noon games, UNC's Know Before You Go notes (Sept. 11 and Oct. 1, 2026) put tailgating, the Modelo Kick Off Club and the Coca-Cola Fan Zone at 9 a.m., with last call for the Fan Zone and Chapel Thrill at 11:30 a.m. We did not find a season-wide lot-by-lot tailgate closing time. The older guide's 'four hours before kickoff' Bell Tower Block Party start is superseded by the 2026 three-hour start. Paid tailgates (REVELxp) are listed at revelxp.com. Coolers and outside food and drink do not go into the stadium.

Are short-term rentals allowed in Chapel Hill and Carrboro?Chapel Hill: stays of fewer than 30 days fall under Land Use Management Ordinance section 6.27 and need a short-term rental permit (the Town's summary lists $150) if a home is rented more than 14 days a year; the permit number must appear in ads. A 'primary residence' rental means the operator lives on site at least 183 days a year; otherwise it is a 'dedicated' rental, which is not allowed in ordinary residential districts, is capped at 2 units or 3 percent in multifamily developments, and cannot take simultaneous bookings. Check any HOA rules. Carrboro: no Chapel Hill-style annual permit was found; short stays are 'tourist homes' under the Land Use Ordinance, which in the residential districts needs a Special Use Permit from the Board of Adjustment, and no separate STR fee appears in the FY2026-27 fee schedule. Rules and permits are the host's job, but they tell you what a legal listing looks like.

How early should I book a hotel for graduation or a game weekend? Unofficial sourceNo hotel page we checked, and not UNC, publishes a booking window or minimum stay for football weekends or Commencement. What we did find: the Inn at Bingham School in Mebane lists a two-night minimum on special-event weekends including football games and graduation (Visit Chapel Hill listing). A parent wrote on r/chapelhill on Feb. 1, 2026 that looking in February for May 8 to 9 rooms was far too late, and a commenter said Courtyard by Marriott at Meadowmont showed a two-night requirement that weekend (a guest report, not hotel policy). The alumni association's Homecoming room blocks for Nov. 14, 2026 (page updated Aug. 19, 2026) showed Hampton Inn Chapel Hill/Carrboro at $369 a night and Hyatt Place Southern Village already full, with cheaper blocks in Durham and RTP and cutoff dates in early and mid-October. Spring Commencement 2027 is Saturday, May 8.
